If we have to store supplies for winter, we need only look at the ground

Nicotine Patch

A finicky
fidgety squirrel
who comes from a world of
Cirque du Soliel
scurries from tree to tree
hyper-excitedly
gathering oblong nuts before
the winter Freezeover

With the sound of the shells clicking in his mouth
he runs to bury them secretly
his mouth a metronome
a fast-paced beat resonating off swollen cheeks

like a violin chamber
used as a rain-stick

Neurotic deer sprint away at the sound
upturning leaves and revealing a
dirty white gem to the rodent
Not snow
but watercolored

like polar bears in alpine woods
it’s sticking out like a sore tail

Confusedly
he picks up the sopping-wet cigarette butt
discarded by the college student
who now lives somewhere between
rare and endangered

Squirrel attempts to store the gummy thing
in his cheek pouches
Immediately spitting it out
he spirals up a tree
mouth burning
shaking with rage at the
deceit he had suffered

Chattering to himself
about kids these days
